Clean Up Coal Ash Lobby Day

June 4, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Free

NCIPL is gathering with people from across the state on Wednesday June 4th to ask our lawmakers to clean up coal ash across North Carolina. This is a great opportunity for folks who want to learn how to talk with your state legislators about our moral call to care for Creation.

Join us in front of the Legislative Office Building for an interfaith prayer at 9:15am.

The Dan River coal ash spill this past February was the 3rd largest coal ash spill in U.S. history. It dumped 39,000 tons of coal ash and 24 million gallons of wastewater (based on Duke Energy estimates) laden with toxic heavy metals into the Dan River from a broken stormwater pipe beneath the unlined pit. Coal ash now coats the bottom of the Dan River 70 miles downstream and is inches thick in some locations. Coal ash ponds at all 14 of Duke Energy’s North Carolina power plants, including those at the Dan River facility, have illegally polluted groundwater for years.

The impact of the spill on local communities is devastating, as the Dan River provides drinking water and water for irrigation and livestock to downstream communities. With 14 coal ash ponds across the state our lawmakers must act to protect North Carolina’s public waterways.

Please join NCIPL for Clean Up Coal Ash Lobby Day on June 4th at 9:00am in Raleigh.
