Let Us Pray Together

September 23, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Church of the Nativity will join other faith communities around the nation and host an ecumenical prayer vigil service on the eve of Pope Francis’ address to a joint session of Congress. It will be an historic visit, as he is the first leader of the Holy See to do this. Furthermore the event follows publication in June of his LAUDATO SI’ Encyclical on the Environment, and precedes the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, COP21, when 190 nations will meet with the aim of establishing a legally binding and universal agreement on climate.

Why are we called to gather in prayer for what might appear to be a sociopolitical event? In the concluding paragraphs of his encyclical, Pope Francis provides an explanation. “Social love moves us to devise larger strategies to halt environmental degradation and to encourage a ‘culture of care’ which permeates all of society. When we feel that God is calling us to intervene with others in the social dynamics, we should realize that this too is part of our spirituality, which is an exercise of charity and, as such, matures and sanctifies us”.
