UNC Newman Center – Interfaith Encyclical Discussion
January 19, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
FreeYou are invited to join in discussion with a UNC student/faculty interdisciplinary group, reading and thinking about ways to use the perspectives raised by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ in their own areas of research and teaching interest.
We will be tying themes of the Pope’s Encyclical to comments on the issues of race and equity in the food systems of North Carolina. Ms. Shorlette Ammons will bring her perspective from Goldsboro where she worked with a public library community garden, with students raising questions about food in their high school cafeteria and a community struggled to create an urban farm in a flood plane area of the city. Since then she has been working with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) through the Cooperative Extension Program at NCA&TSU to expand our understanding.
The Pope is calling all humans to become aware of the damage being done to our planet “our common home” in terms of environmental, economic, social and biodiversity areas and to work together to bring about changes for the better!
